The Golden Era
Indian cinema is going through a beautiful phase where audience is entertained through various genres of films. However, 40's-60's is considered as a golden era for the Indian film industry. Still, for me the most exciting period of Indian cinema will be 60's. Though I wasn't able to witness the enigmatic era however, this is the very era which attracts me. This era brought colour on the silver screen. In this very period actors, changed the meaning of acting and stardom. It is interesting fact that each era/period of cinema has added at a macro level to the industry. Cinema was very diverse and touched different dimensions of human life. While the commercial cinema was gaining importance parallel cinema was rising it's head at other end. Pioneer for the parallel cinema in India was Bengali cinema. Hindi cinema too was gaining popularity through the medium of parallel films with films like Bimal roy's do bheega zameen [1953] and Chetan anand' neecha nagar [1946]. The later even won grand prize at first Cannes film festival. Popular cinema was too was gaining it's foothold. Even though when technology was not up to the mark for filming some of the best cinema was made. According to me, the entire film fraternity was going through a great transformation. Entertainment was so much refined, uncomplicated and sophisticated. I have always believed that our Indian cinema is a expert at dealing human emotions. The way emotions were handled or the way they were shown on 70'mm were over the top but it connected well with audiences of the very period. Films like mughal-e-azam, pyaasa, mother India, shree 420 are considered epics for the very fact that they were considered magnum opus at the same time they depicted true beautiful feelings and emotions. Each actor of those films were institutions themselves. Acting was done with heart and soul by feeling every character. Guru dutt, Raj kapoor, Bimal roy, K asif, satyajit ray are not only founders of this kind of cinema but they played a great part in shaping up the film industry whose first brick was laid by dadasaheb phalke. Story telling through music, dance, acting was beyond brilliance.
In kagaz ke phool's as the film commences beautiful words were said by guru dutt. Studios, sets remain the same but films and filmmakers change. Yet some films are considered classics. Range of films genres were experimented pre and post independence cinema. At one end heavyhearted cinema was created and at the other end the 'aam addmi' was enjoying the joyful movie. Each filmmaker or actor went out of their comfort zone and tried out different scoops of film making.
Guru dutt and bimal roy made their own respective set of films. They very much touched a sorrowful part of a human. They did not amuse audiences much through masala films but they were known for traumatic or sorrowful films. Our very own charlie chaplin of India who is considered also as the showman attached his special charm and magic to his films. He is none other than Raj Kapoor. He brought to the screen fun, romance, sensuality, emotions and a lot more. His films were able to entertain all age groups and not only India but also international audiences. One more legend who we cant forget is Dev anand. He made films which were potboilers and let cash registers ringing at the box-office. He loved films beyond the horizon. Until his last days he was very much active and engrossed in making films. That is the reason why he is considered as evergreen Dev saab. In this lot of actors and directors there was a singer who is not only a legend but considered as the man who changed the definition of singing. He was Kishor kumar. He sang a range of songs but he tried his hand in acting and their too he made millions of fans. His comic timing, expressions were so much perfect. One actor who charmed women and unwrapped his ability to perform was dilip kumar. Dilip saab delivered some amazing cinema. It was a treat to watch him on screen. Shammi Kapoor was another actor who was known for his dancing and his style and he sizzled onscreen. These are only a few to name but there were a whole wide spread of breed of actors who were talented in their own right. Actresses are not to be forgotten. Madhubala was known for her beauty. Nargis was known for her talent to emote to perfection. Then there was Waheeda rehman who had attractive and charming persona. Vaijayantimala had not only enchanting and captivating beauty but also she was an actress who brightened screen with her enigma.
These people engineered each scene and each act with so much brilliance that they not only satisfied their performance appetite but also touched people's heart. Such is the legacy of Hindi cinema.
