Azad Cinema {freedom motion picture}
Patriotism. It is one such feeling which tears your heart and brings tears to one's eyes. Then it does not matter which country you belong . It is one such feeling around which an entire film can be built up. As there are other emotions such as revenge, romance, fear etc. patriotism has always been one strong emotion in Indian cinema. It is so because, India as a country which has been through the worst phases and bad environment where people have lost their their lives or everything they had. Mostly, the patriotic cinema captured the Indian freedom struggle or the pre or post partition period. The first ever Indian war film was made by Chetan anand by the name Haqeeqat 1964. Although this film brought together the Indo-China war not freedom struggle, it developed a strong sense of an Indian emotion. There were very less films showcasing the Indo-China war. Then, this film was followed by string of patriotic films dealing with different chunks of the freedom struggle. Right from Gandhiji to Bhagat Singh to Subhash Chandra Bose every one's life story was so unique and inspirational that each flim made on them and different patriotic leaders were not only thought provoking but also had a sharp edging view to it. For some reason each patriotic hindi film have shown the worst phase that India has suffered. Even if, this is true there are certain things acted by British Colonial rule which immensely benefited our very own Indians especially the poor and women. Anyways it is unfortunate that very few people where able to showcase this bright side too.
Another great filmmaker who rooted the reigns of patriotic cinema in Hindi films was Manoj Kumar. He was mainly responsible for carving a niche for himself and Indian cinema with his own set of films which were patriotic and entertainer when only masala potboilers where cashing on the trend. He was also referred to as bharat kumar { bharat is other name for hindustan}. Writing on such a man in few words would be a mere shame. However, after the period of this legend very few films were made on the azadi{freedom} emotion. Hindi cinema went into a phase where song and dance was the heart of the film.But a great attempt was done by Ben Kingsley to portray a character as Gandhi who is not only a world renowned person but also who is father of Indian freedom struggle. Beautifully he transformed himself into a man who was completely unknown to him still he acted to perfection.
Modern cinema tries to paint this emotion in different colors. Movies were made on extremist leaders like Swatantra veer Savarkar, Bhagat Singh or even Subhash Chandra Bose also on passive leaders like on Nehru or Gandhi. Movies such as these were made on one hand and on the other a different aspect of the struggle which can be related to today's times and which can be applied to the modern day world was put up by Rakesh Omprakash Mehra through his film Rang De Basanti. A new angle or should I say a new perspective was launched by this film on a dais of freedom struggle.
Till now much have I spoke about the patriotic cinema but now there is a whole new dimension of freedom movies. A bunch of movies have been made on freedom struggle and fighters. Still, some movies viewed the effects of partition. Earlier these movies were showcased as arty cinema. Now, they are pulled into mainstream . One such old classic is Garam Hawa. Smooth and flowing script showcasing a muslim family pre and post partition.Certain movie makers crafted movies like khamosh paani and pinjar dealing with women affected mostly by it.
This kind of cinema can't be categorized as masala or an art film. They have altogether developed an independent and individualistic sense of perception.
Each time patriotic cinema has proved their worth now and then and I hope this kind of cinema not only entertains us but each film adds a different adjective to this kind of cinema.
